Discovered in 1940, CBD (short for Cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring compound that is extracted from the Cannabis Sativa plant (Hemp). There are many Cannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant (over 100) but the main ones you need to know about are CBD which is non-psychoactive and legal within the UK and THC which is the component that gets you high.
CBD will not get you high and is legally sold within the UK as a health food supplement.
THC is the primary psychoactive compound in marijuana and is not legal in the UK.
So is it safe? Well, a 2017 World Health Organization report found that CBD, in its’ pure state is safe, well tolerated by humans and animals and not likely to cause physical dependence or abuse. That being said, everyone can react differently to any product, so we always recommend that you start with a low dose and see how the effects work for you. You can always increase the dose if necessary.
Claims for the beneficial effects of CBD are wide ranging and can be hard to verify. We make no medical claims and always recommend that you consult your doctor before taking a new supplement and while only one CBD based drug is currently being prescribed by the NHS studies are ongoing to provide clearer insights into the benefits of taking CBD.
It’s also really important to be certain about what you are buying. Quality, purity and concentration of CBD can vary hugely. All the brands we stock have independent laboratory testing of their products, both to ensure compliance with the law but also to provide certainty to the consumer that you are getting what you are paying for.
